“HEROES FROM OUR TOWN” Project: Avery’s Story
Avery is featured in Nicole’s “Heroes From Our Town” community art project which features portraits of local individuals (Franklin County, PA and Washington County, MD) who have been nominated by friends and family as a “Hero” because they are looked up to for their strength through difficult circumstances or they have an inspiring story to encourage others. Each portrait and story is featured weekly on Nicole Troup’s Facebook and Instagram pages @nicoletroupmasterpiece
Avery Watts was diagnosed with Homozygous Familial Hypercholesterolemia (HoFH) at the age of six. HoFH is a rare genetic disease, which inhibits her body from naturally processing cholesterol. Because of her illness, at the age of ten she has a heart murmur and the beginning stages of heart disease. There is no cure for her disease and very few treatments are available due to her specific genetic make-up. Avery has a port in her chest, which allows her to have LDL Apheresis to clean her blood of cholesterol every two weeks. She may soon need to begin doing this treatment every week.
Avery is a strong young lady, who never complains about her illness. To advocate for others who share her illness and to raise awareness of other rare diseases, Avery has gone to Capitol Hill to meet with Senators and Representatives, and three years ago, she made a video for Rare Disease Awareness Day. Her video can be seen here https://youtu.be/LmKnEXGFoik
